Remote, scenic and ideal for small private parties – Deildará river offers an exceptional value-for-money Icelandic salmon fishing experience for the discerning angler.
Located in a volcanic valley in the northeast of Iceland – 80km from Húsavík airport – the Deildará is an intermittent salmon river that also holds many beautiful sea-run Arctic char and wild brown trout. Relatively small at only 12km in length, the river is split into three beats over 7km of fishable water, which are accessed at the beginning of each day by car.
Anglers can expect 3 full days (plus two half days) facing off against fresh and powerful Atlantic salmon using both single-hand and switch rods, with full floating lines and surface flies working well on a wide selection of crystal clear pools.
The recently renovated lodge has been beautifully designed to offer anglers great comfort during their stay. Available either fully or self-catered and sleeping up to six people, it is an excellent choice for a small party or family group who would like to immerse themselves in Iceland’s true wilderness.

Fishing
Deildará is a great river with rushing riffles and runs, meadows, small, fast pools and lovely long wide pools. In addition, it has a superb run of Arctic char, of up to 6lbs towards the end of the season in August.
The river is short and narrow. It can be compared to a Scottish highland spate river, although this river is lake-fed, meaning you are unlikely to have low water conditions. As the river has a fast descent to the ocean, there is a good flow for fly fishing throughout the system.
The river also has a cluster of large, lake-like pools dotted throughout. These are fantastic holding pools for salmon and sea-run char.
With the beautifully clean water, small flies are often successful, and we’d recommend using single-handed rods. It is also wise to take your box of dry flies out for the day, as there are prolific numbers of large brown trout that can come on the rise on the evening hatch.
Finally, we would recommended that you hire a guide for at least the first day of fishing to help you get an idea of your surroundings and learn where all the hot spots are. After a day of guided fishing, you should feel comfortable being let loose as a group on your own.

Accommodation
The recently renovated lodge has been beautifully designed to offer anglers great comfort during their stay. Available either fully or self-catered and sleeping up to six people, it is an excellent choice for a small party or family group who would like to immerse themselves in Iceland’s true wilderness.
The lodge is cosy with a snug sitting room accompanied with comfortable sofas so you can kick back and relax after a long day on the water. Three bedrooms in separate buildings, each with twin beds, allow up to 6 guests in the lodge.
Additional facilities include a hot tub with views of the river mouth and ocean, and a sauna to recharge your energy levels after fishing.
The lodge is also based at the river’s mouth, only meters from the beach, meaning you can enjoy a cold beer on the decking while watching salmon enter from the sea.

Food & Cuisine
Deildará lodge is a self-catering lodge with all the kitchen facilities you could ask for and a local supermarket nearby. You can cook whatever you want, whenever you want. We recommend taking a packed lunch up the river each day and enjoy a sandwich on the banks of the river.
Although the lodge is designed as a self-catering one, we can organise a chef to be there for you. This comes at an extra cost but allows you to enjoy the evenings without worrying about cooking.

Day 1 – Home City to Reykjavik
- Fly from home city to Keflavik International Airport
- Taxi from Keflavik International Airport to Reykjavik City. Approx 1hrs ($80)
- Check-in to hotel and overnight – Please contact us if you require advice on hotels
Day 2 – Reykjavik to Blandá lodge
- Transfer to Reykjavik Domestic Airport
- Fly from Reykjavik to Hussavik Airport
- Transfer to Derildará lodge from Hussavik Airport and fish for the afternoon
- Continue to overnight at the lodge
Day 3 & 4 – Continued Fishing
- Continued fishing and overnight stay at Deildará Lodge and river
Day 5 – Morning fishing continue home.
- You will fish the morning on Deildará River and head back to the lodge to prepare for departure
- Transfer will take you directly to Hussavik Airport
- Fly to Reykjavik Domestic Airport and transfer directly to Keflavik Airport for home flight
- Continue with your own arrangements

Do I need a Visa to travel to Iceland?
You do not need a visa to travel to Iceland if you are a British Citizen. You will be granted 90 days free of charge upon arrival.

Do I need a hire car?
You do not need a hire car. We can organise transfer drivers to collect you from the lodge and hotels. Although if you would like more freedom, you may hire a car. All lodges have good road access.
A 4×4 is recommended if you will be using your own car to fish from.

What else can I do Iceland?

Will the Mosquitos be bad?
Iceland is one of the few northern hemisphere salmon fishing destinations with a massive lack of biting insects. No mozis or midges, so no need to worry!

Suitable gear
The Deildará is a small intermittent river with a handful of larger pools. Generally, you will be fishing with single-handed rods throughout with full floating lines. It can be also useful to have a switch rod at the ready for the few larger pools.
Surface flies are often successful in the warmer months amidst other classic salmon flies. The water in Iceland is very clear so remember to take plenty of small flies and sunray shadows.The Deildará has a good number of wild brown trout that often come on the rise in the evening hatches, and it is wise to take some of your dry flies with you.
The Icelandic weather can be very temperamental. A famous saying in Iceland goes: “if you don’t like the weather, just wait 5 minutes”. This is very true, and all four seasons can sometimes come at once, so bring some good waterproof clothing.
Generally speaking though, the summer months of June to early August provide nice warm days with some cooler evenings. Iceland has very little fly life, so no need to worry about midges or mozis.
